Mineral Springs

The Most Well-Known Mineral Springs for the Respiratory System

Luhačovice Vincentka is a highly mineralised, alkaline, iodine-containing bicarbonate-chloride-sodium mineral water rich in beneficial elements. Its therapeutic effect comes from the local action of a fine mist on the respiratory mucosa – mechanically, through humidity, temperature, and osmotic pressure.

In Mariánské Lázně, the most famous mineral spring with positive effects on the respiratory system is the Forest Spring.

How Temperature and Droplet Size Affect the Respiratory Tract

The temperature of the inhaled aerosol is a key factor, influencing inflammation, mucosal hydration, and mucus clearance. An aerosol at around 37–38 °C hydrates the mucosa, loosens dried mucus, stimulates the ciliated epithelium, and facilitates expectoration.

The alkaline nature of Vincentka additionally neutralises the acidic environment of diseased mucosa and relieves discomfort. Iodine and chloride ions help dissolve mucus, calcium has an anti-inflammatory effect, and the presence of CO₂ supports blood circulation and metabolism.

Droplet size determines the depth of penetration:

  • Fine mist (< 10 μm) penetrates the lower respiratory tract, reaching bronchi and alveoli.
  • Coarse mist (10–40 μm) settles in the upper respiratory tract (nose, pharynx, larynx).
  • For the paranasal sinuses, an aerosol with particles < 1 μm is ideal, as these can return into the cavities during exhalation.
Inhalation

Types of Inhalation According to Temperature

Hypothermic inhalation (25–36 °C)

  • Reduces mucosal congestion
  • Has anti-inflammatory effects
  • Suitable for acute inflammation
  • May cause bronchospasm in sensitive individuals

Isothermal inhalation (36–37 °C)

  • Calms the mucosa
  • Suitable for less irritating conditions

Hyperthermic inhalation (38–44 °C)

  • Increases mucosal blood flow and metabolism
  • Stimulates secretion and ciliary activity
  • Loosens dried mucus and crusts
  • Suitable for chronic and atrophic conditions
Inhalation

Effects of Mineral Water Inhalation

  • Mucolytic effect (thinning of mucus)
  • Reduced mucosal irritation
  • Increased secretion and easier expectoration
  • Improved ciliated epithelium function
  • Support of local metabolism
  • Calming and regeneration of the respiratory tract

Respiratory Tract Regeneration

In the spa towns of Luhačovice and Mariánské Lázně, mineral water inhalation is an essential part of therapy for chronic inflammation, allergies, asthma, and recurrent respiratory infections. It is beneficial for both children and adults seeking long-term relief and support for mucosal regeneration.

The Respiratory Tract Treatment stay is the ideal choice for anyone looking to strengthen their respiratory health while enjoying professional spa care.
